Description and Appearance
iOS is a mobile operating system developed by the Muggle company Apple Inc. for its hardware, such as the iPhone and iPad. It is a graphical, icon-based system controlled through a multi-touch interface. As a product of 21st-century Muggle technology that rose to prominence after 2007, it does not appear in the original seven Harry Potter novels.
Magical Properties and Usage
iOS has no magical properties. It is a product of advanced Muggle science and engineering, which wizards like Arthur Weasley might find fascinating but is fundamentally non-magical. The wizarding world generally eschews such complex Muggle technology, as magic tends to interfere with its operation. Hermione Granger notes that electronic devices do not function on the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry due to the high concentration of ambient magic.
History
The first version of iOS was released to the public in 2007. The primary narrative of the Harry Potter series takes place between 1991 and 1998, with the epilogue set in 2017. Consequently, iOS and the devices it runs on were not invented during the period in which the main story is set and are therefore not mentioned in the books.
Role in the Story
iOS plays no role in the Harry Potter series. Characters communicate via magical means such as the Owl Post service, the Floo Network, Patronus messengers, and enchanted objects like the two-way mirror given to Harry Potter by Sirius Black, rather than using Muggle electronic devices.
Behind the Scenes
While absent from the original novels, modern smartphones and their operating systems are tangentially related to the franchise in the real world. For example, the official Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite mobile games are applications that run on iOS and other mobile operating systems, creating a meta-relationship between the Wizarding World and modern Muggle technology.
