Marcus Flint

Marcus Flint was a Pure-blood or Half-blood wizard and a student in Slytherin House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was a contemporary of Fred and George Weasley. Flint was the Captain and a Chaser for the Slytherin Quidditch team for at least three consecutive years. He is primarily characterized by his aggressive, win-at-all-costs mentality on the Quidditch pitch and served as an early antagonist to Harry Potter in his school sports career.

Flint's presence is noted primarily through his involvement in Quidditch. In Harry Potter's first year, Flint was already the established Captain of the Slytherin team. During the first match of the season against Gryffindor, he deliberately fouled the Gryffindor Chaser, Angelina Johnson, demonstrating his poor sportsmanship. In Harry's second year, Flint was a sixth-year student. He led the Slytherin team in a confrontation with the Gryffindor team when both had booked the Quidditch pitch for practice. It was during this argument that Draco Malfoy, the new Slytherin Seeker, called Hermione Granger a “Mudblood”. Flint had accepted Malfoy onto the team after his father, Lucius Malfoy, gifted the entire team with brand-new Nimbus 2001 broomsticks. By the start of Harry's third year, Oliver Wood confirmed to his team that Marcus Flint had finally finished his education at Hogwarts.

Marcus Flint is described as looking as if he had “some troll blood in him.” He was large and imposing, a physical presence he used to his advantage in Quidditch. His personality was aggressive, brutish, and unsporting. He had no qualms about cheating to win, as seen when he blocked Angelina Johnson. His leadership of the Slytherin team was based on intimidation and a shared arrogance, particularly evident during the confrontation with the Gryffindor team over the practice schedule. He showed a pragmatic, if opportunistic, side by accepting Draco Malfoy onto his team in exchange for superior equipment.

  • Quidditch Player: Flint was a capable, if dirty, Chaser and served as the Slytherin Captain for multiple years. His leadership, while ruthless, kept the Slytherin team as a formidable rival to Gryffindor.
  • General Magical Ability: Beyond his presence at the Duelling Club in his sixth year, no specific details about his broader magical skills, wand, or academic performance are provided in the novels.
  • Harry Potter: Flint was one of Harry's first direct rivals at Hogwarts. Their animosity was confined to the Quidditch pitch, where Flint represented the unfair and bullying nature of the Slytherin team.
  • Oliver Wood: As the opposing Captain, Flint had an intense rivalry with Oliver Wood. Their interactions were defined by their mutual desire to win the Quidditch Cup.
  • Draco Malfoy: Flint was Malfoy's Captain. He readily accepted Malfoy's “buy-in” to the team, showing a willingness to overlook lack of proven skill in favour of gaining a material advantage over the other House teams.
  • Marcus: A traditional Roman praenomen, possibly derived from Mars, the Roman god of war. This name aligns with Flint's aggressive and combative personality, especially in the context of Quidditch.
  • Flint: A hard, sedimentary rock that can produce sparks when struck against steel. This surname suggests a hard, unyielding, and tough character with a potentially fiery temper.
  • A known continuity error exists regarding Flint's school year. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, he is stated to be a sixth-year student. For this to be true, he would have been a fourth-year in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. However, students must be at least in their fifth year to become a Quidditch Captain, a position he held in the first book. J.K. Rowling later clarified this discrepancy by stating that Flint had to repeat a year. (J.K. Rowling interview)
  • In the film adaptations, Marcus Flint was portrayed by Jamie Yeates. The films gave him noticeably large and crooked teeth to emphasize his brutish appearance. He anachronistically appears in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, despite having graduated from Hogwarts years earlier in the book's timeline. (film)
