Hats in the Wizarding World
Introduction
Hats are a common article of clothing in the wizarding world, serving both as mundane fashion accessories and as magically enchanted objects. They are a required part of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry uniform and are frequently worn by prominent figures in the magical community, such as Albus Dumbledore and Cornelius Fudge. While many hats are simple apparel, some, most notably the Sorting Hat, possess profound magical properties and play significant roles in wizarding history.
The Sorting Hat
The single most famous hat in the wizarding world, the Sorting Hat is a sentient magical artefact used at Hogwarts to determine which of the four school Hogwarts Houses each new student belongs to.
- Type: Magical Device, Sentient Object
- Maker: Enchanted by the four founders of Hogwarts: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.
Description and Appearance
The Sorting Hat is described as a frayed, patched, and exceedingly dirty pointed wizard's hat. A tear along the brim opens like a mouth, allowing it to speak and sing. When not in use, it typically rests in the office of the current Headmaster or Headmistress of Hogwarts.
Magical Properties and Usage
- Sentience: The hat is fully sentient, capable of independent thought, speech, and song. At the beginning of each school year, it sings a new song of its own composition, often offering cryptic warnings about the state of the school or the wider wizarding world.
- Legilimency: The hat's primary function is to sort students. It does this by using a form of Legilimency to delve into a student's mind, assessing their personality, values, and potential. It can also engage in mental conversation with the person wearing it, as it did with Harry Potter.
- Summoning the Sword of Gryffindor: The hat has a unique connection to another of Godric Gryffindor's artifacts, the Sword of Gryffindor. A true member of Gryffindor house in need can pull the sword from within the hat. Harry Potter did this in the Chamber of Secrets, and Neville Longbottom did so during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Other Notable Hats
While the Sorting Hat is unique, other hats are notable for their appearance, magical properties, or association with specific characters.
- Augusta Longbottom's Hat: A tall hat distinctively topped with a large, stuffed vulture. This hat became famous when Neville Longbottom, facing a Boggart that had taken the form of Professor Snape, used the Riddikulus charm to force it into wearing his grandmother's vulture-topped hat and her green dress.
- Cornelius Fudge's Bowler Hat: The Minister for Magic was almost never seen without his lime-green bowler hat. It became a symbol of his office and his personality, and he was often described as twisting it in his hands when agitated or nervous.
- Headless Hats: A practical joke product invented by Fred Weasley and George Weasley and sold at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. The hats are enchanted with a powerful Disillusionment Charm, which renders both the hat and the wearer's head invisible, creating the illusion of a headless person.
- Hogwarts Student Hats: As part of the official school uniform, all students are required to have a plain, pointed black hat. These are worn on formal occasions, such as the Sorting Ceremony and the arrival at Hogwarts via the Hogwarts Express and boats.
- Albus Dumbledore's Hats: The Hogwarts Headmaster was known for his flamboyant style, which often included long, pointed wizard's hats that matched his elaborate robes.
- Removable Brain Hats: Mentioned by Luna Lovegood as a promotional item from The Quibbler magazine. These hats were said to allow the wearer to remove their brain for “a bit of a wash.” Their actual existence is highly doubtful and likely a fabrication of Xenophilius Lovegood. (The Quibbler)
