The Hopping Pot is described as a small brass cauldron that stands on a single brass foot. Initially, it is a simple cooking pot. However, once enchanted, its appearance changes to reflect the ailments of those its owner refuses to help. It can become covered in warts, spew spoiled food, and produce loud, distressing noises. After its owner finally learns his lesson, the pot becomes clean once more and sprouts a single, perfectly fitting slipper for its brass foot, ceasing its disruptive behaviour.

The pot's primary magic was bestowed upon it by a kind old wizard to teach his cruel, Muggle-hating son a lesson in compassion. The enchantment activates when the pot's owner refuses to use magic to help a non-magical person in need. The pot then takes on the symptoms of the afflicted Muggle and torments its owner relentlessly. Known manifestations of the pot's magic include:

  • Hopping incessantly on its single foot, making a loud clanging noise.
  • Sprouting warts.
  • Braying like a donkey.
  • Spewing sour milk, foul-smelling cheese, and bad cabbages.
